We’re talking about our Christmas Wish List as RevolverGuys, over on the site. Is anyone here hoping Santa will deliver a revolver-related Christmas surprise?

I know ammo is on your list, but what else?

Mike

Oh wow, what a question! I could write a book!

First, do you like leather or plastic?

For custom leather, I’m fond of Sam Andrews’ work, but—fair warning—he was a little backed up with orders the last time I checked in. You can also get excellent custom leather IWBs from Sparks or Ritchie, and perhaps they’ll be faster to deliver. For production-level gear, I’ve had great results from DeSantis, Galco and Aker. I also see that Safariland has rejuvenated the Bianchi line, and recently launched a dedicated Bianchi-branded website that’s worth checking out.

For plastic, Dale Fricke does a wonderful job with revolver holsters, and so does JM Custom Kydex. I’ve been impressed with both of those custom makers. They understand how to build a good revolver holster. Some of the other makers do a great job with the autos, but don’t understand the subtle nuances that change when you build a holster for a round gun.

I’m not a fan of the hybrid designs, with the leather backer and plastic outer shell. I know they’re comfortable for many people, but they collapse too much when the gun comes out, and I’ve seen some scary attempts to wedge the gun back into them when it was time to put it away. So, for safety, I generally don’t recommend them. Another concern, if you have a smaller waistline, is that they take up a lot of real estate on the belt.

That’s just the penny tour. You’ve got a lot more coming for your nickel’s worth, but the recommendations start with a long list of questions, like:

What type of cant do you prefer?
What kind of retention device do you prefer, if any?
What is your build like?
Where on the belt do you want to carry?
Do you have any injuries (shoulder, back) that need to be accounted for?
What kind of attachment do you like (clips, fixed loops, P-T-D loops, etc.)?
Do you like rough side or smooth side out leather?
Etc…………

It is a good list. I especially agree with the Airweight K frame and the six shot SP101 in 38.

Fist #19. It's a leather IWB with dual offset snap straps placed as close to the gun as possible. I have one for every revolver that I own that I would even think to ccw. And most of the bottom feeders too.
