American Eagle 223 fmj, AE223jlc. listed muz. vel. 3240.
10.5" PSA upper.
2498
2501
2509
2478
2498

16" S&W, no muzzle device.

2815
2854
2798
2825
2861

10.5" avg. -2496
16" avg. -2830

This works out to 334fps difference between the barrels, not near as much as I thought it would.
The crono was at 10ft.

The pistol, learn it well, carry it allways. Jeff Cooper

Thanks Russ - I found that very interesting. Wasn't the original a 20" barrell and a 12 or 14 to 1" twist, at around the listed 3200 fps? It seems to me that at almost 500 fps less there must have been a substantial decrease in effectiveness - not that I'd want to get hit by either. Does anyone still make the 12/14 to 1 barrell anymore? Any idea what would be the most effective defensive round in the 16" barrels? At the current time I am using a 55 gr ballistic tip as the home defense round, for velocity and expansion and to limit over penetration, although it seems that the military is going to heavier rounds. Have you run any of the 70+ gr jhp's over your chrono?

Yes, I beleive the listed fps is from a 20 inch barrel. As to heavier bullets I have not clocked any in this form, years ago I shot some from a 20 inch Bushmaster but I do not recall the speeds. I have not seen a 12 -14 twist barrel for some time. Maybe others have.
