Had a Ruger P-89. Friend wanted it worse than I did. Got me a Springfield 1911A1 parkerized "Mil-Spec" in .45

Should work fine for a pistol when I am on a 500 acre cattle farm that has all kinds of critters from stray dogs to coyotes and possible unfriendly trespasser. I go there to Deer hunt, see family wwhile they are working, and just get away from people for a day.

Wife knows I have a few pistols, and asked me pointing at my Glock .45 "Can that not handle any rain or other weather?"

Well I wanted this pistol and have a handful of mags and pile of ball ammo for it so my excuse sounded good till she smiled after her question.

Arv -

Maybe you wife is more of a weapons expert than you give her credit for. The Glock would be better all around and probably would be more weather resistant and carries more rounds, but guns are not just for business. They are for fun too. I'm sure you will enjoy your Springfield. You surely will not be undergunned with it.

I think that for some of us, this election made it more difficult to justify to our spouse that we need some new guns. That said, if you don't have a 6" .357 wheelgun, you probably should. My .357 Smith Combat Magnum was my constant buddy while I was a cop, and it is still my first choice when I am out in the woods. It rides very comfortably in a shoulder holster. Lots of power and much better long range accuracy than an autoloader. We have grizzly bears within 100 miles of home and if I was in one of those areas and could only have a handgun, it would be a .44 mag.

Each of us is an innkeeper, and we decide if there is room for Jesus.

I have pair of 4 inch .357's and a few Glocks. I just wanted a parkerized 1911A1.45 to put back and enjoy shooting with the stainless Remington version. The old WWII Colt made in 1943 my last PD issued me as a "Off duty" sidearm was a shooter, and I was about the only one who had one that ran without issues. I'll take this one to a old Church member who went thru the Colt and run this Springfield thru his hands and smooth the trigger a tad. Change grips to Hogue with finger grooves, load up several mags of ball & a few with hollowpoints and let it ride in my pickup when I am out in the rural areas. A SKS will always be there, even if I am gong hunting with my 30-06 rifle.

While I like, prefer, and carry hollowpoints one day IF things go from ugly to bad ugly .45 ball beats 9mm ball and if it was good enough from France in WWI thru the jungles in Vietnam then I bet at close range it would work well. Trump may have won but evil ain't leaving anytime soon.

My "Reason" was just to mess with my wife.. Yeah, she's no dummy and tells me to go buy what I want knowing we meet our needs and financial obligations.

Now I will gladly take my wife to dinner this evening and watch her buy that new hair dryer she wants. I'll be armed with a S&W .38 snubbie and a Glock 19 9mm...

Arv, You did the right thing, a rugged fun gun that you like...Sounds like you have a wife who understands. You have a smithy who will take care of your new friend. Bill D

Used to be, when I'd mention buying a new/different gun, Momma would have all kinds of questions about why, how much, don't you have something already that will do the job, do you really 'need' it (oh, that N-word!), and so on. Now she just shakes her head and reminds me I have to pay for it. I still like getting new guns, of course, but it seems like it was more fun back then.
Sounds like you made a good deal, Arv. Enjoy it. Ace

Hi, farm/outdoor pistols used to be referred to as "working guns" versus self defense/combat guns. Precluding my remarks that either can be used in both venues; I usually think of the revolver as a "farm" pistol and semi-autos as self defense. This just may be my personal quirk/prejudice. I started to carry a .44 Special loaded with wadcutters at night because of the coyotes. If I was more concerned with the 2 legged kind I would carry my usual, a 1911. Pest removal usually involves a pellet rifle, 22LR, 12 ga or M1 Carbine. YMMV, regards, Mike

PS, I've started to use YMMV, your millage may vary, because I don't wish to insult or denigrate others opinions.I know I'm right but I don't want to rub it in the faces of those that don't know this. :-)

For a truck pistol, this should work fine with my Mosin & .22 rifle in the truck. Somewhere a Glock 19/Glock17/RugerSR9C tends to hang on my hip and a 19 year old S&W .38 snub rides in a front pocket.

Thanks a bunch, guys!
My wife saw this thread on my IPad and immediately asked me, if I was going to get "another .45"......
Uh, yeah, I am honey, why do you ask?
Her answer.....
I get your "old one" (fingers making air quote marks) then!

My wife has serious carpal tunnel issues and can shoot a steel framed 1911 without the pain caused by other pistols, revolvers and calibers. Plus, she just looks plain cute with a 1911 in her hands.

You'll get no flak from me. For the last week I've been tramping the wood wearing a 1911 on my right side and a S&W 1955 Target with .45 Auto Rim handloads (250 gr JHP at 1050 fps) on the left

I opt for a little different approach when wandering around local woods & farms. I take the M&P 9c out of my Bianchi Shadow CCW holster and insert a Glock 29 10mm. It takes the same 15 round mags as the G20. One is stuffed with Cor-Bon 180 BCSP (about 1275 fps from the G29) and the weakside mag pouch carries 175 Win Silvertips (about the same 1275 fps) in the event I wander into town (don't want to be launching the Cor-Bons around bystanders - they penetrate like heavy .44 Mag loads!)

The biggest critter problems I face are black bears that can exceed 500 pounds, and wild hogs. I figure 15 rounds of BCSP will deal with that. And, by just shifting 15 round mags I don't have to change my CCW gear if I stop in town.

I know more than a few folks who like the 10mm (and specifically the Glock 10mm) for the field. I can't say I blame them.

Do you swap out the round in the barrel?

I use a Ruger GP100 in 357 mag for my ranch gun. Have a Marlin 1894 to match it.

The key is to hit them hard, hit them fast, and hit them repeatedly. The one shot stop is a unit of measurement not a tactical philosophy. Evan Marshall

Jim H.

I was going to suggest a Glock 20.

I think Arvin just wanted an excuse to buy another 1911.
