I got out a couple times looking for grouse.
Opening day, Sept. 15, was very slow. No grouse and almost no
other birds. Only got cussed out by one red squirrel.

The 17th was different. Warm with lots of small birds, red
squirrels hollering at me a lot, ravens and a flicker.
No grouse.

Last year the same places I hunted were almost sure places to find
grouse. One place often had two or three bunched up.
I can leave the house and be hunting there in about 15 minutes but
I think I'm going to have to go farther out to find birds this year.

Still fun to walk around with my 20 gauge OU.

A walk in the woods is good therapy. Busting feathers is gravy.
For those really desperate days, squirrel pot pie can help.... Ace

Where are you in the UP? I may be in the Sidnaw area in a week or two.

It's continued to be a slow grouse season here.
Went out on the 24th and jumped six along an old logging road.
Shot at a couple and missed same.

Went out today to the same place. It was earlier in the day than the first trip and
quite windy. Saw no grouse, just a few chickadees and a red squirrel.

Tried another spot a few days ago and saw no grouse there. Talked to grouse and bear hunters and no one
said they'd seen grouse.

Caught two brook trout on the last day of general trout season just to prove I still knew how to find something in the
woods. They both went back in the creek, too small. Next spring one might be worth taking.

Sorry to take so long to get back. Lots of stuff happened. No sign of email and it does not look good for a trip to the north country now.
God Bless

Got a couple grouse in the freezer now. One is going on the table at Thanksgiving.
Found a spot where they are going after apples and keep fairly regular hours while
doing so.

It's a strange year. Grouse still seem to be in groups so harder to find. Most years there
have been a lot more singles.

Snowing here now with freezing temps. I plan to take the day off from hunting and get some writing done.
