Hi Jim,

The fact that you use aluminum Blazer ammo for self defense surprised me a little. I had always considered aluminum cased ammo as a low cost practice load.

I'm not going to ask you if you consider it as reliable as brass case loads, because you obviously do (otherwise you wouldn't carry it)

While I cannot document any aluminum case failures, I thought that,
#1 there was more friction with aluminum than brass, thus cutting the margin of error in an auto regarding feeding (not a problem with a 629)

#2 increased chance of case failure causing among other things a possible issue with extraction, especially with higher pressure rounds.

#3 extreme cold temperatures can make the case more brittle.

Please understand that I am not saying that any of these reasons are correct, only that this is what I had always thought. But, if there is truly no reason not to carry Blazer ammo for defense, than why aren't more defensive loads available for it?

If my only choice was a loaded .25 or an unloaded .45, I would choose the empty .45. They both have the same stopping power, but the empty 1911 looks a lot more convincing and makes a better club.

As to loads for S&W 629 with 4" barrel, my absolute favorite of a actually owned guns, I for many years used the Aluminum loaded 44 special 200 GDHP for mild and Win 44 mag 210 STHP for magnum (haven't been able to find the magnum silvertips for some time).

Now I've got Corbon 44 mag 165 JHP for mildish & Federal 44 mag 180 JHP for magnum, though health issues plus doc/lab visits have kept me from getting to range to verify zero with new loads

If it wasn't for some of my health issues I'd probably carry a N frame as one of my CCW, I normally carry 2 guns.

I've long thought a 44 mag paired with a 9mm covered a lot of possibilities.

Though for regular CCW I'd probably go with 357 mag, 41 mag or 45 ACP+P instead of the 44 just because of public perception.

Though the 629 has served as nightstand and car gun for many years.

If my rememberer is working properly, it seems I recall from Evan's books that the full-bore .44Mag was not very effective for social purposes; I'd presume it's 'too much of a good thing.' .44Spl, don't remember the particular loads, were much better.
If I could find my copies, I could refresh the memory bank, but I don't remember who borrowed them. Ace

Well your surprise is not very far off the mark - normally I view blazer and even Blazer Brass (and now Federal Champion which is the same stuff) with a little bit of skepticism.

But the two .44 loads sort of stand out in our geographical area as readily available and they are also loaded just about right I have less concern with aluminum in revolvers.

I do have some of the .44 Special 200 gr Gold Dots in the Lawman line also and I actually prefer them somewhat but they don't make that .44 Magnum load in any other form (or perhaps it should be called ".44 Minimum").

Neither load is high pressure and the cases simply fall out when you upend the revolver.

I do not care for Blazer in autos - for the reasons you cite. Occasionally if it is cheap I might consider it for practice.

I've seen a ton of 9mm Blazer go down range as a IDPA SO during the last decade and cannot remember a single ammo related issue with it.

I haven't shot a lot of the other calibers, but years back their 200 grain .44 Spl (not sure which HP design) did very 'nice things' in my Fackler Box, and I wouldn't hesitate to carry it in a revolver (unless it was a Charter Arms... but then, I wouldn't carry anything in a Charter Arms. )

Chris, the 44 Special Blazer was loaded with 200 GDHP at least as far back as 90s, if not always.

IIRC Gold Dot bullets actually happy accident of Speer trying to make cheap plated/jacketed bullets.

I never had any of the 45 ACP flying ashtray ammo, didn't have a 45 ACP (I'm a revolver man) till Hydra Shoks existed.

But I suspect the 44/200 GDHP is even bigger hollow point.

I know the buddy who, he's worked at gun shops forever, got me my first box of them was impressed. When he brought them in on break at 3rd shift job we both worked at he couldn't stop commenting about it.

Almost whole crew at that job were hunters or shooters, they all said it was largest HP they'd seen.

It's only Blazer aluminum load I've ever liked, I tried some Blazer aluminum 38's & 357's and has sticky extraction not high pressure signs, even unfired some would stick a little.

But the 44 specials have always worked smoothly.

My only quibble is I wish they loaded them a bit faster, I like the 44 magnum shortbarrel loading of the bullet at ~1050 fps but wish it was in a special case.

BTW for a those that like the special loading of that bullet but want brass Speer loads a nickeled brass version same load Speer # 23980 Midway carries it.

It's just $1.60 a round vs $0.83 a round
