I am now starting to carry my Glock 23 and I was hoping to get some input on the top self defense loads. I have some Federal HST 155 gr that functioned nicely and was very accurate out of my G 23. I was wondering what some of the best performers were? DPX? RANGERS? HST? SPEER? and what GRAIN since that seems to be a hotly debated subject. I tried the search function but it doesnt seem to be working for me. Thanks in advance

I carry DPX in every gun I have that they make it for

I just ordered some DPX for my G23 and G27. I will try it out. Seems like Cor-Bon likes the lighter weight higher velocity theory.

The 155 gr HST is one of my favorite loadings in 40 but as Keith said once - - - "There aren't any bad 40 loads." I also like the 180 grain JHPs. Light 'n fast or slow 'n heavy? They all work.

I suspect it has more to due with physics than "likes". No lead means less weight. Less weight and equal energy means higher velocity.

The 155 HST is my carry load. It does very well in barrier penetration and gello tests as well as a few 2nd hand reports of shootings. When all of my DPX got dingy, I switched-not because I think one is vastly superior to the other. But I think that HST is pretty darn close to DPX in performance AND a buddy and I went together on 1000 rds to get a great deal from ammoman a few years ago ($15/50). If I was a rich guy, I'd put DPX in every defensive gun I own. I believe it's slightly to greatly better than anything else. Still, when we get to a certain point in the great stopping power debate, the differences are miniscule and tend to overshadow what's really important in self defense.

DPX and HST are my preferences. I haven't found 155 gr., but have 165 (my preference), and 180 at: 1087 and 970 fps, respectively, from a P229.

There's some reclassified LE ammo that's found it's way to the gun store shelves (in some places). I bought a couple boxes.

The XM40HA is a 135 gr. HST that I chrono'd at 1130 fps. Respectable, but not screaming along like CorBon. According to one site where it can be found, it was developed for the Border Patrol and their HK 2000's. Don't know what happened, since it's my understanding they now use the Rem. JHP.

Any one have any info on this ammo.

Respectfully, you answered your own question right there.

I am issued 165 GS by Remington. My issue G27 has my own ammo due to shortage at work, so I loaded it up with 155 Winchester jhp's. My Personal G22 has 180 HST, free ammo. I think any of it will get me thru, if I do my part right.

As much as I make fun of the .40, from everything I've read/heard from reliable sources, it seems there is no bad defense loading in the caliber, at least from the 'name' manufacturers. If I ever condescended to carry a .40, I think it would serve well with whichever round proved to be most accurate and reliable in my gun. Ace

+1 on what Ace said. I carry the Federal HST 155 in my G23 because it has a good rep and I got a super deal on a bunch 2-3 years ago.

Both of the departments I have worked for issue the 155gr Speer Gold Dot. It has functioned flawlessly in the Glocks and Sigs I have shot (no weapon lights).

In the various shootings our guys have been involved in, the bullet has done its job when our guys did theirs.

Other loads work very well also, but I feel comfortable with this load.
