This may been already discussed, anyway I'd like to know what ammo you have for your AR/Mini-14, etc.
I load up with 55 grain ball ammo. I have Federal and Remington, and WOLF for last on the list to use. I may need to consider a better choice, but I stuck with ball for the price, availability, and I know what it does.

55 gr .223/5.56 ammo will do the job, the bulk of my ammunition is 55 gr ball. I have a limited stock of 55 gr soft point ammo and some Wolf hollow point. I get no heartburn over having ball ammo and I don't obsess over wound cavity etc. All the hoopla about fragmentation, wound cavity, temporary stretch, and so on came about because the M 16 made folks DRT in numbers disproportionate to it's caliber and bullet weight. The lab coat guys wondered "Why". In this case the saying "They all fall to ball" may have a loud ring of truth.

If I was rich I would have all my magazines loaded with DPX-instead I have a few loaded with it, and the rest a hodge podge of Prvi 75gr match, Prvi 55gr fmj, and assorted jhp's and Winchester 55gr sp.

The WWB 45 grain jhp's easy to find at wally world, what do you think of them Evan? I think you said something once before about them, I have one mag in the rifle for the house filled with them, and I'd like your thoughts.

I've bought of alot of that-fine for antipersonnel-for barriars-you'll need to chew your way thru but other than DPX you'll probably have to do that anyway.

Like Evan, if I was rich - and could find ammo - DPX is my first choice. Federal 62gr Tactical is my second with Mk262mod1 77gr OTM the third.

But mostly, other than a mag with DPX (which I keep marked so I dont accidentally waste it), and a couple with the others (likewize marked), 95% of my mags have M193 or M855 in them.

I am not a guy easily impressed and 5.56 does not impress me but it will do. I know of several actual cases - not just war stories - where it took up to 14 rounds to stop a fight (all of those were decent hits). That does not mean that it happens everyday or even most of the time. It happens just enough to catch my attention and to not expect everybody to fall just because you shoot them once or twice.

Also dont want to give the impression I am uncomfortable with one - I am very comfortable with them (or the .30 Carbine with expanding bullets or the 7.62X39) so long as I have an ample supply of "BBs".

I do worry abuut a bullet that wont reach the spine in a thick subject though - which is why I favor DPX or Bonded bullets. Those penetrate flesh a bit better than ball (most ball - some of the foreign stuff is pretty solid - a problem in and of itself).

Jim H.

PS - 53gr DPX and 62gr Federal Bonded both hit almost exactly to the same P.O.I. as M855 for me - that's a plus!

I use the 5.56 because it is available, and the platform allows quick repeat shots for multiple targets. I shoot less than most here, but I try to keep my shooting skills up to an acceptable level. All 5.56 practice is with fmj ammo.

I try to use soft point ammo for predator control. When time is of the essence I use fmj that is already loaded in the magazines.

I've depended on Ball ammo. Winchester, Federal. Still have close to 1000 rds. of old Norinco. Works fine (high flash, though). Have 700 rds. PMC military spec made by Eldorado.

Lately tested 75 gr. TAP FPD, since it's been available lately, and 62 gr. DPX--also available on line.

Both work well in Both AR 15 HBAR and Mini 14's. TAP 75 gr. and 62 gr. DPX shoot close enough to point of aim from both Mini-14's and AR15. So does 55 DPX, and 60 TAP FPD.

The military spec ball likes to shoot lower, especially in the two
Mini 14's.

If I grab a Mini 14 to take with me in the car, at least the first mag is DPX or 75 TAP. If I take the .30 Carbine, it's DPX for sure.

I have a mix.

I don't do dope raids anymore, and I do get involved with felony car stops regularly now that I am back on nights, so my carry ammo is a mix of DPX (I only have enough for one magazine), Federal Tactical and Hornady Barrier TAP.

I have two mags of Federal 69gr OTM as well if I feel like I need something that penetrates less, and some of our issued Hornady 60gr 5.56 spec SP.

If I run out of all the above I have a stash of green tip and 55gr XM193

I have small quanities of various hp and sp to experiment with to see if something will give at least as good accuracy as now unavailable Radway Green, at a semi reasonable price. Bulk hoarding/ blasting ammo seems pooised to be Wolf 62 fmj. I know I should be happy with 2 min of felon, but I'm spoiled by how well my Sportster shoots Radways. It gives me confidence to have 'good accuracy' by real rifle standards, instead of telling myself ' well not bad for use by untrained peasant conscript army' .

I have a mix of DPX, Lake City 62 gr. hp,assorted 55gr. ball, 50gr. hp, and federal 40 gr. hp. I keep a mag of 40gr. hp for the house and a couple of mags of DPX if I needed good penatration.

Does anyone know how the 75-77gr stuff works in comparison to DPX regarding penatration?

Nobody ever wished they had a smaller gun, with fewer bullets, in a gunfight...author unknown

I've got two magazines of Black Hills 69 Grain BTHP.

The rest is a mix of stuff. Some good, some not so good. It will all get the job done if I do my part.

DPX outpenetrates every other bullet loaded in the .223/5.56mm

I keep my mags full of m855. I wish they were full of DPX.

I have a decent supply of Wolf 55gr HP and JSP, with some ball for when I want to play a little. Hoping it will be adequately effective if needed, but if anyone knows anything bad about this ammo, I'd hope to hear about it. My gun likes it, shoots well within minute of felon out to my own capabilities. If I should be replacing it, I need to get started.
Hoping to try it on some coyotes this winter. Ace

I use a little bit of everything for defense but our dept has gone to Speer 64gr Gold Dot based on testing done by the armorer sgt. It whipped the Hornady TAP ammo during the tests. In fact the sgt told me that TAP had it's reputation because of its extremely successful advertising. I'm going to be loading this [url] which the sgt says is relatively the same.

Q3131 was purchased in "adequate numbers" some time ago -- it will have to do! What I've been able to do with it, on targets, in my HBAR Colt gives me enough comfort. Financial and other matters (of discretion) discourage me from replacing. Therefore: "Amen."

How close is the velocity of the Federal value pack FMJ's to the M-193? Does anyone know?

I have 55gr HP's in mine, they are Monarch brand which is what Academy sells. I have several boxes of Wolf 55 gr HP's and 4 boxes of 55 grain remington SP's I have hand loaded.

I have 13 loaded 30 round mag's in my safe, and the 10 rounder that came with my Keltec SU16C, which is a great gun for the money.

With my cheapie red dot scope, I can routinly bang a 9 in steel plate offhand at 100 yds, and my rifle has a built in bi-pod of sorts. It is sighted dead on at 25 yds.

I have enough brass and primers to load about 1800 more rounds.

75 grain match grade ammo is what I would load a Mini-14 with if I had it either that or surplus stuff

A Mini 14 won't stabilize 75gr bullets.

I stocked up on BlackHills 60gr Softpoints when they were on sale @ Cabelas last year. Shoot good, have seen results on whitetails. Shoots out of both my 1-9 carbine and 1-7 rifle.

The only positive thing that I have seen come from ammo availability issues is that more people are buying whatever quality ammo that they can find and moving on, instead of agonizing over which ammo might be a few 1/10's of a percent "better". I find that TV commercial with Brett Farve unable to make a big screen purchase to be hilarious!
