I just finished an advanced pistol class. One of the subjects was on bullet stopping power. I must admitt I am really tired of the 9mm vs 45 thing carry what you want and keep it moving.

However, the instructor said that the same recoil felt from the weapon is the same impact that the perp would feel.

Is this true.

I forgot myself for a moment there.

Cops and guns cause crime.....

....and combs cause hair

I still try not to step on them too.

No, but they can break your Mother's back.

OTOH, he may have been enlightened enough to know that kinetic energy has no *causal* relationship with incapactitating people. There may be some coincidental relationship but the thing about coincidenetal relationships is that we cannot count on them.

Every year the cracks in the sidewalks get bigger about the same season that crime increases in big cities.

That does not mean that wider sidewalk cracks cause crime

I probably should not venture into this but I suspect the instructor might have been saying that you cannot expect to bowl people over with the force available in a handgun bullet since the "equal and opposite reaction" we know will be there would bowl the shooter over.

One should not take it to mean much else. Evan pointed out above how the bullet works. I dont doubt your instructor was telling you not to expcet "the Hammer of Thor" - if that is the case, he is right.

Again, I have no way of knowing exactly what he was trying to get across.

I guess using that logic it would be better to shoot the perp with the biggest handgun out there, what it it, the 500 S&W?

Not to insult others, just toooo many armchair commandos who want to sell you stuff, or blow smoke your way.

I'm sorry, MM. That's inane. Just one small factor of this complicated topic: What if the bullet over-penetrates? Some of that energy is spent downrange. That instructor over simplified that subject, for certain.

NO-one is foot lbs of recoil and the other is cutting&tearing issue and putting in holes in things that will cause blood loss.
