I have a chance to buy a quantity of Speer GDHP 124+p at a good price. I would mainly shoot it out of a Glock 19.

On a search, I ran across this thread here that mentions reliability
issues that NYPD had with that round and their G19's.

http://www.stoppingpower.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12357

Is there any update on this topic? I'd hate to buy a bunch and have reliability issues. Thanks.

I would say if your pistol works be grateful and hang on to it. If it isn't broke don't fix it.

My original G19 is a older 19. (it only has 2 letters in front of three numbers in the serial number.) It's been 100%. I have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation magazines, and it likes them all.

I guess my question is should I bother with a upgrade?

Thanks for your answers. I bought several boxes to test and practice with, I will have to check on any needed upgrades.

What ever load use choose I would shoot 200 rounds to test for reliability. If your breech face is cut at 90 degrees send it for a upgrade. www.thegunzone.com/glock/breechface.html

Third generation G19's have a slight barrel redesign that requires using newer mags. Older mags will occasoinally (100-200 rds for my two guns) stub a JHP round into the bottom of the feed ramp. Newer mags have a small "4" or higher on the top of the follower, and the right side of the mag does not have a "step" on the outside. It's actually the mag body that makes the difference, it presents the cartridges higher onto the feed ramp. RN will work fine with any mags.

Much cheaper to buy new mags than to do enough testing to find out if maybe you got lucky and your new gun will work with old mags. Of course as Evan says, you still need to test each gun/mag/ammo combination.

you have to check your gun to see what it likes or doesn't-its that simple and that frustrating

Has anyone heard of any problems with the GLOCK 19 not liking the Federal 124 grain +P HST rounds? I am about to test a few for carry in my model 19 (Older frame style, serial# BCL###) for off duty use...Thanks.

Evan, the forcing cone angle on S&W Revolvers were often 11 degrees which worked fine for wad cutter loads. The 18 degree angle works best with Jacketed loads. At times there was some degree of cylinder size drift that could cause patterning in S&W Revolvers.

we need to remember we could grab two Glock 19's that came out of assembly together and find that one loved Win ammo and the other hated it.

for years I looked for a Smith 1955 Target, 6 1/2 barrel .45 ACP/AR. Back then we could not carry auto pistols and I wanted a .45 ACP. Had planned to carry Super Vel jhp, but the gun would only "pattern" with any load except 230gr fmj-with hardball it was a tack driver but I have no more faith in .45 fmj that I would in 9MM fmj. Tried a bunch of handloads with dismal results. Traded the gun off and forgot about it.

As long as we remember that the same model can show widely divergent preferences we'll be fine.

Seems to be a gremlin that pops up from time to time in G19s of any generation since it first popped up in 1996, w and w/o all the mods (through to K guns, w and w/o angled slide/extractors, w and w/o "1" on bbl, etc), w various types/brands of ammo.

Know a guy whose new G19 did it several times in the first 3K rounds. He replaced just about every part, still did it. Three (!) trips to Glock, still did it. That was in 2002. He traded it for another gun w full disclosure.

A local cop had it happen to his trusty G19 w Fed 115 +P+ 9BPLE during Q in 2003. Had never happened before in about 20K rounds w that ammo and other cheap FMJ, never happened since w about another 20K rounds of same ammo. He didn't change/fix anything, just shrugged and said stuff happens. Or not.

Never happened to any of the G19s I've had since 1989 (several). I could worry about it, but I don't.

gw:

What is the advantage of shortening a G19 grip to G26 length? I don't understand what you mean by "it was really a little slicker than a G26". I take it that your shortened G19 would accept G26 mags? Why not just buy the G26 and not bother shortening the grip? I don't understand something here...
JohnS Posted - March 03 2008 : 6:04:34 PM
I'm not Evan (lucky for him) but for almost all applications the 19 is "small enough".

Evan:

I have been trying to decide between a G19 and a G26 for CCW. I understand that you prefer the G19. Considering that the G19 has a full size grip, I prefer it too. But I'm thinking that the G26 provides more carry options since it is smaller. As far as grip size goes, when it is possible to carry a longer grip, one could simply insert the longer G19 magazine. I realize the grip feel would be different from the G19, but it would give the G26 the extra length for the fingers. In view of the multiple length magazines option, I have tentatively decided in favor of the G26, since it's grip can be made longer with longer mags, but the G19 cannot be made shorter. Does this make sense, or is there another factor that I have not considered here?

they still approve them-NYPD does not an have issue gun-they have an approved list and officers buy there own gun.

Absolutely - words to live by . . .

Does anyone know if the Glokc "fix" made NYPD satisfied?

Good to know - thanks. Mine has that on it.

As you stated in another post, it could be linked to the Wolf ammo. I've shot about 500 rounds though it since the incident and no problems.

The ammo was a mix of more Wolf, my reloads and 124+p hydroshocks that I had sitting around.

So is the 1224+p GDHP's OK with the newer guns with the "fix"?

My 1993 vintage Gen1 G19 got finicky when the extractor chipped and went dead twice when the little loops at the end of the trigger springs broke. Polishing the eyelet where the spring attaches solved the breakage problem and the gun has run without a single malfunction for the past several years.

At this point in its life it is "as sure as death and more certain than taxes if you have a good CPA".

Unfortunately, our Ego's get us in more trouble than the Taliban. "Glock Perfection" may be a dandy marketing slogan but it tends to create a bunker mentality that often creates a block to fixing things.

There are people on this Board who have dealt with alot of heartburn over "Perfect" guns that would not run-cop guns-not casual use guns. I like some Glocks and own a 26. I bought it for my wife for CCW and, of course, she decided she preferred a Smith 640 loaded with .38 DPX.

I carry it sometimes with total confidence. I'm currently expermenting with a Smith M&P .45 to see how my 65 year old bones handle the weight.

I've owned several 19's and think its the best 9MM out there-my son's keep liberating them though. If I had known my wife was going to prefer a snub I would have bought a 19 not a 26. I've been carrying full size and multiple handguns on a daily basis for decades.

somewhere in Lou Allessi's production line are a couple of Glock holsters for me. when they show up I'll get another Glock 9MM and carry two along with assorted other guns.

Just to add my experience. I have had four Glock 19's and never had a malfunction of any kind. Two were GenII and two were GenIII. I like the 2's the best, and so have kept one of the four. In thousands of rounds of many different manufacture, my GenII has never stumbled once. Even when loading 23 mags with 9mm to check functioning as an experiment. Just my personal experience of course. Colin

try some different ammo and if problems persist-get it back to Glock-I consider the 19 the best of the Glocks though I bought a 26 for my wife for ccw but she prefers the Smith 640 with CT grips.

These are nasty jams that require more than a tap-rack-bang fix.

I think I would attribute that to Wolf.

Chuck, I have 1996/1997 G22/G23 (Gen II), and they have the 15 degree extractor cut that's identical to my Gen III Glocks. Do you have any idea why the G19 Gen II pistols would be different?

OK - so the 90 degree extractor vs the 15 degree modification resulted from that issue? Wasn't NYPD already using 3rd gen G19s? Thanks.
